The Malta Marathon is a yearly event which boasts three options: the full marathon, the half marathon and the walkathon.
The full marathon is the most challenging of the three marathons and starts off from Mdina and passes through Rabat, Mtarfa, Ta’Qali, Mosta, Attard, Pieta, Gzira and finally ends in Sliema. The route is 42 kilometers in length and is recommended for trained athletes. The drop in height from the starting point (Mdina) to the ending point (Sliema) is of approximately 200 meters and the route must be completed in less than 5 hours.
The half marathon follows a similar route but cuts through parts of Ta’ Qali and Mosta so as to reduce the distance, presenting a 21 kilometer path. This marathon is of moderate difficulty and may be attempted by most joggers within a time limit of just under four hours.
The walkathon follows the same route of the half marathon, yet it is approached at a more leisurely pace by its participants.
