Baikal Ice Marathon offers competitors the unique opportunity to race across the frozen waters of the largest, deepest and biotically richest fresh water lake in the world. The Marathon is a part of a larger Lake Baikal winter games festival, the “Winteriad”, which includes  also “Baikal Kamchatka”  Ice Fishing  and Baikal Ice Golf Tournaments Ice Skating Races and a few other outdoor adventure  events. The surface of the frozen Lake Baikal is covered in fields of ‘hummocks’, small hills of ice rubble. Beneath the ice surface, geothermic springs and seismic activity cause localized melting that weakens the ice to form holes and cracks. Besides, every winter huge ice pressure ridges appear near the marathon course which is flat, but the surface is hard and uneven. Although it is mostly covered in a soft layer of snow, there are areas of highly polished ice that create conditions similar  to an ice-rink. Strong winds may often add to the already bitingly cold temperature and provide serious resistance to progress across the Lake. Baikal Ice Marathon is both psychologically and physically demanding. The utterly featureless landscape gives little or no sense of perspective to competitors, offering them nothing to focus on but how far they […]

The Malta Marathon  is a yearly event which boasts three options: the full marathon, the half marathon and the walkathon. The full marathon is the most challenging of the three marathons and starts off from Mdina and passes through Rabat, Mtarfa, Ta’Qali, Mosta, Attard, Pieta, Gzira and finally ends in Sliema. The route is 42 kilometers in length and is recommended for trained athletes. The drop in height from the starting point (Mdina) to the ending point (Sliema) is of approximately 200 meters and the route must be completed in less than 5 hours. The half marathon follows a similar route but cuts through parts of Ta’ Qali and Mosta so as to reduce the distance, presenting a 21 kilometer path. This marathon is of moderate difficulty and may be attempted by most joggers within a time limit of just under four hours. The walkathon follows the same route of the half marathon, yet it is approached at a more leisurely pace by its participants. Application forms may be obtained by clicking here.

Situated south of the equator – in Tanzania – at 5 895 metres, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, and the highest free standing mountain in the world. “Kili” as she is affectionately known, is one of those iconic sights every person should see at least once in their lifetime. Every year, since 2003, at the end of February/beginning March, a standard 42.2 km marathon, 21.1 km half marathon and 5 km fun run are held in the town of Moshi, in the shadow of Kilimanjaro. This AIMS registered race has been set up to promote the sport in Tanzania, and has the official backing of the Tanzania Tourist Board, the Tanzania Amateur Athletics Association and the IAAF. The atmosphere in Moshi over ‘race weekend’ is electric.  With so much energy, people out running under the shade of jacaranda-tree lined streets, plenty of places to explore including lots of restaurants and pubs offering a full range of foods – from local fare including fantastic Indian, Italian and English menus.  Lively pubs – even some live music / discos around town.  There are a good number of hotels in the area, but book early as they get filled up over race weekend.
