A total of 14.800 runners, aged 9-85 years, flooded the streets of Thessaloniki and Macedonia, lived a unique experience, won the applause of many fans and sent a message of fitness and health, through an event that has also social, cultural, environmental, touristic and historic character. An event that since 2006 is “joining” Pella with Thessaloniki and displays throughout the world the name of Alexander the Great. The International Marathon “ALEXANDER the GREAT” connects the past with the present, crossing within 42 km over 2.500 years of Macedonian history and Hellenism. The route will be cyclical by the seaside in the north part of Rhodes city and will arrive in the city centre of Rhodes in a festive atmosphere. The Rhodes marathon has the official approval of AIMS which ensures the validity and the international recognition of the race. You start on Wagramer Straße in modern Vienna, close to the “UNO-City”, the seat of the United Nations, and finishes in the city centre in front of the Burgtheater. Immediately after the start, the participants cross the river Danube on the 864-meter Reichsbrücke bridge towards the city center. You pass the huge Ferris wheel and run on the completely flat “Prater Hauptallee” (main avenue) through the large, green park area of the Prater. Tuusula is home for over 36 000 people and about 1 900 companies. The drive to Helsinki takes half an hour; to Helsinki-Vantaa airport, a quarter. Hyrylä is the centre of Tuusula, at the southern end of lake Tuusulanjärvi. The red-brick buildings in Hyrylä are reminiscent of the garrison tradition. The valley along Tuusula-river, and Lake Tuusulanjärvi are the lungs of Hyrylä and significant recreational areas. Jokela is the northern centre of Tuusula along the main railway line. It is a community constructed in garden-city style; its industrial history is linked with an old brickyard. Several lovely pools are a remnant of the brickyard tradition. Tuusula is home to the Tuusulanjärven Maraton. The event has been organized since 1994. Half-marathon and marathon route has been officially measured, and it passes mainly around the Lake Tuusula asphalted pedestrian and bicycle path. The route runs for the first time along the Tuusula Lake Road and offers cultural experiences both runners as the public route even passes by Jean Sibelius’s home. The Belgrade Marathon (Beogradski Maraton) is one of the biggest sporting events in Serbia. A group of enthusiasts came up with a plan to restore the race that existed in 1910 from Obrenovac to Belgrade. The first modern marathon in Belgrade took place on May 8, 1988. The track length of the original 1910 marathon was 23 km with several checkpoints. The track length of the 1989 marathon was 46.7 km, with the start and finish being in front of the Federal Parliament Building. Since 1990 the Belgrade Marathon has a standard 42.195 km length. The 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia did not prevent the Marathon from taking place that year, and on April 17 the race was held as a metered group run. About 40 runners from nine countries crossed the finish line at 3 hours 15 minutes and 16 seconds. The runners from NATO countries were Zane Branson from the USA, and Michael Turzynski and Heinz Lorber from Germany. The latter two are also founding members of the German 100 Marathon Club. The Borneo Marathon is a marathon held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia. The inaugural race was held on October 12, 2008. This is the first marathon in the state for over 20 years. The first marathon in Sabah was held in 1984 and it was called the Daily Express Sabah Marathon. The next marathon was called the Borneo International Marathon (BIM). BIM was organized by Championship Sport Events Sdn. Bhd., helmed by Mr. Andrew Voon as the Race Director as well as the person instrumental in organizing the Borneo International Marathon.
